Daisy’s practical planner

For beginners, the instructor chooses the day and the safest part of the beach.

Whitesands and Newgale are the practical first choices because they have established instruction and seasonal lifeguard coverage. Experienced surfers may look farther afield, but powerful rips, reefs and rapidly changing swell mean local knowledge is more valuable than a generic star rating.

01

Book tuition first

A good school will move or reshape the session around conditions and ability.

02

Respect the flags

Surf, kayak and paddleboard between black-and-white flags at a lifeguarded beach.

03

Do not chase size

Long-period swell and rips can make a modest-looking sea hazardous.

04

Pack for after

Robes, warm layers and hot drinks make the return to the barn much happier.
