Atlantic puffin carrying sand eels on Skomer Island

Skomer Island · puffins and seabirds

Take the boat into one of Britain’s great wildlife days.

Skomer is not a casual turn-up excursion. Book the boat, protect a weather day and pack for an island with puffins at your feet, seabirds over the cliffs and no café waiting at lunchtime.

Why make the trip?

The boat is only the beginning of the day.

Landing trips leave Martin’s Haven and give visitors several hours ashore. Puffins are present from spring into July, while flowers, shearwaters and seals shape other parts of the season. Sailings are weather-dependent, so place this early in your stay.

01

Meet the puffins

Stay on paths, move slowly and let the birds decide how close the encounter becomes.

02

Walk the island

Expect uneven paths, exposed weather and a full outdoor day rather than a managed attraction.

03

Pack everything

Take food, water, waterproofs, sun protection and zipped bags for island biosecurity.

Boat or landing trip?

Decide whether you want time ashore or wildlife from the water.

A landing gives the fullest puffin experience. A RIB trip may suit guests who want marine wildlife and dramatic cliffs without committing to a long island walk. Both depend on sea conditions.
